Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica) is one of the three ingredients HorseWood is built around for testosterone support, alongside Boron and Tongkat Ali. It's also one of the most misunderstood — most of what gets said about it online skips the actual mechanism entirely. Here's the honest version.
Nettle Leaf isn't studied for making your body produce more testosterone. The research interest is around something more specific: sex hormone binding globulin, or SHBG — a protein that binds to testosterone in your bloodstream and makes it biologically unavailable. The more testosterone that's bound to SHBG, the less "free" or usable testosterone your body actually has to work with, even if your total testosterone number looks fine on a lab test.
Laboratory studies have found that compounds in nettle root and leaf extract — including lignans like secoisolariciresinol — can interfere with SHBG's ability to bind to steroid hormones and to receptors in prostate tissue. Human pharmacological studies using nettle root extract have shown measurable decreases in SHBG levels compared to placebo. The idea is that lowering SHBG activity could, in theory, leave more testosterone in its free, usable form.
Where the research is more mixed is on testosterone itself: some studies have shown modest increases in total testosterone with long-term use, while others — including a larger study with over 500 participants — found no measurable change. This is a case where the mechanism (SHBG binding) is better documented than the downstream effect on testosterone levels, and we think it's worth being upfront about that gap rather than overselling it.
We include Nettle Leaf because the SHBG mechanism is real and well-documented, and because it complements Boron and Tongkat Ali rather than duplicating what they do — Boron is studied for total and free testosterone directly, while Nettle Leaf's angle is freeing up testosterone that's already present. Together with five more traditional botanicals, the formula is built to support multiple angles of male vitality rather than betting everything on one ingredient or one mechanism.

Nettle Leaf has solid laboratory and pharmacological evidence for lowering SHBG activity, with more mixed human data on testosterone itself. It's a reasonable, traditionally-used addition to a testosterone-support formula — not a guaranteed fix on its own, and not a substitute for medical testing if you suspect a real hormonal issue.
